Northumbria University takes gold in National IDM Student Competition
Released 05 July 2005: The winners of the 2005 IDM National Student Direct Marketing Competition were announced at a special awards ceremony last week. Top prize was lifted by students from Northumbria University, while silver went to the University of Bath. Merits were awarded to second teams also from Northumbria and Bath universities.
The winning team members were Jessine Gebhard, Ross Longton, Kate Manning, Tanyin Middleton and Charlotte Wilson, who won a cash prize of £1,500. The silver award winners were Charlotte Davies, Lindsay Lountain-Pick, Ashlea Miller and Lucy Unwin who picked up £800 in prize money.
This year’s competition was sponsored by Guinness and agency Tullo Marshall Warren and received over 100 entries, while an estimated 2,000 students will have worked on the competition case study brief as part of their course work. The 2005 brief was provided by the sponsors and, as usual, required the students to work on a real live issue. The task was to put forward a detailed marketing plan describing how Guinness should use their existing customer relationship programme to increase volume share in their customers’ drinking repertoire.
Presenting the awards, Louise Curran, Senior Brand Manager – Guinness, Diageo, said: "We are very proud to be sponsoring the 2005 IDM Student Competition and were pleased to have the opportunity to get young business brains looking at a real business brief about a real issue. We were incredibly impressed with the quality of the entries, and the four finalists in particular proved themselves to be really in touch with our business. They were competent, confident and very well-prepared."
Janice Pickard, Deputy Education Director at the IDM added: "Each year we are delighted at the high standard of entries to the competition. The aim of our education programme is to help launch the best young talent into the profession: all the finalists in this year’s competition have demonstrated that they are, without doubt, bright, talented and well on their way."
