An Audience With Rory Sutherland
London 16 February: Fellow professionals, IDM members and senior practitioners were joined together for an evening with Rory Sutherland, who revealed the single thing which good marketing has to do - and without which all other efforts may be squandered.
Ever popular with IDM audiences, we were delighted once again to welcome industry luminary, renowned marketer and hugely entertaining raconteur, Rory Sutherland, Vice Chairman, Ogilvy Group and President of the IPA.
One of marketing’s most original thinkers and influential speakers, Rory brought an inimitable, passionate, ebullient style which captivated, enlightened and inspired his audience. On 16 February his subject was “the priceless knowledge which all direct marketers are privy to, but which they have long neglected”, where he revealed the one single thing that good marketing has to do.
Rory’s spontaneous, free-form approach supplied many an anecdote, but he promised (and succeeded) in incorporating additional discursions on:
- nudge theory
- behavioural economics
- Darwinian Psychology
- …and why it pays to buy women flowers.

Rory Sutherland, IPA President and Vice-Chairman of Ogilvy Group UK
With over 22 years experience at Ogilvy, Rory is now Vice-Chairman of the Ogilvy Group UK. He was elected President of the IPA in April 2009 and is the first creative and direct marketer to hold the post.
Rory was President of the Direct Lions Jury at Cannes in 2007 and was awarded the Andi Emerson Award at the New York Caples Awards for services to direct marketing in 2009.
