Knowledge and Networking Evening: Whose Data is it Anyway?

Whose Data is it Anyway?

Hear the word “data” today and you’ll usually hear nouns like “explosion”, “wealth”, “plethora” or “abundance” in the same sentence. On 24 January 2012, senior client marketers from the IDM Data Council presented up-to-the-minute case studies of the organisations for whom the collection, understanding and ultimate use of customer information is central to their unquestionable success.

Opening up data to the people it really belongs to, ie you and me, is one of the big ideas for 2012. With the government providing a framework via the midata initiative, it could herald a sea change in the relationship between data controllers and data subjects. So are we about to see innovation as a result of political policy, or will commercial organisations shy away from too much visibility of their data management activities?
