The 5 Skills You Need In Marketing!

The increasingly fast paced nature of the industry means that you need to be on top of your game more than ever. Many skills can be learnt on the job, but we've put our brains together and come up with a list of the 5 essential skills you should polish up on to make sure you're ready and raring to enter into the world of marketing.

1. Communication

From having a good telephone manner to a friendly handshake, the key to a good marketer is communication. Your job is after all, to communicate a message to your audience! Understanding the most effective way to convey this will be your ticket to success. Remember, being an effective communicator isn't just all talk; the ability to listen to your peers/audience's opinion is crucial in being able to respond with a well thought-out, tailored response to improve both yours and your company's productivity.

2. Knowledge of the industry

This goes without saying in any industry, but even more so in marketing. The industry is evolving at lightning speed, and to be at the top of your game you really need to know what's going on. It's important to check industry news online on a daily basis as well as attending events that will not only improve your understanding of the industry, but allow you to network and build those all-important connections.

3. Being socially active

We hate to say it, but you are the digital generation, and with that comes a massive advantage in knowing the ins and outs of social media without needing much 'real' training. You don't need us to tell you how much brands interact with their audience through social media, so showing a good understanding of the workings of different social channels is key. As well, being active yourself on these channels will stand you favourably; this doesn't mean posting copious selfies on Instagram, but sharing marketing-related content on LinkedIn and even having your own blog will show great initiative!

4. Having an opinion

You have a voice so use it! Again, this is a given in any industry, but the most effective way to generate ideas is to bounce off each other so don't be afraid to say what you think. Of course it goes without saying that it's important to respect others, but contributing your opinion to a discussion is what will drive those exciting, creative ideas.

5. Personality

The marketing world thrives off the diversity of individuals that form it, so let your individuality shine through. Yes, we're biased, but the wonderful mix of characters combined with a fantastic assortment of skills makes it the best industry to be a part of. By being yourself you're much more likely to earn the respect you deserve which in turn will enable you to be the best version of yourself both professionally and personally.
